Marcus Kohler
Editor in Chief - ex-Goldman Sachs Tech IPO desk (Snap/Lyft/Pinterest 2014-2019) + ex-a16z growth equity (2020-2024)
Background
I am Marcus Kohler, founder and Editor in Chief of Tech Financials. I spent ten years at the intersection of public-market tech finance and private growth equity before going independent in 2024. Five years at Goldman Sachs Tech IPO desk in San Francisco (2014-2019), where I worked the Snap, Lyft, and Pinterest IPO advisory mandates, followed by four years at Andreessen Horowitz on the growth equity team (2020-2024), covering later-stage SaaS, fintech, and developer-tools investments.
I hold an MBA in Finance from Stanford Graduate School of Business (2014) and the CFA charter. I am based in the Mission District, San Francisco.
Editorial voice
Tech Financials is influenced by Matt Levine’s Money Stuff (rigor without the ironic humor), Stratechery (Ben Thompson’s analytical depth), Sacra Pro (private market discipline), and The Diff by Byrne Hobart (skeptical-of-narratives data work). I write for tech VCs, sell-side analysts covering tech, founders planning a cap table or pre-IPO, and treasury teams at growth-stage companies.
Every analysis opens with a one-line provocative thesis, supported inline by a cap table snippet or financial chart, then a 3-data-point summary box. Sources are cited inline and numbered in a bibliography at the end. Each piece closes with a Verdict box: what it means for VCs, founders, or treasury.
Editorial independence
Tech Financials accepts no paid placements. Occasional tech finance service mentions (Carta, Mercury, Brex) are disclosed inline at the point of mention when the analysis context requires it. There is no primary affiliate model. Revenue comes from guest post sales transparent on the methodology page.
Sources policy
All citations link to primary sources: S-1 filings, 10-K, 10-Q, 13F, Form D, and the SEC EDGAR system. Plus Pitchbook PE/VC deal data, Crunchbase tech IPO pipeline, Sacra private market pricing updates, Carta Equity Summary, and NVCA quarterly reports. Secondary aggregation (TechCrunch reporting on a 13F, The Information summarizing an S-1) is never cited - Tech Financials goes back to the primary document.
